INS Viraat wins Cock Trophy

Aircraft-carrier INS Viraat won the coveted Cock Trophy during the Western Fleet Whaler Pulling Regatta, making it the last time the warship participated in the event before it is decommissioned in 2016.

INS Viraat was declared overall winner team and awarded the trophy. In the keenly contested event, aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya emerged runner-up.

The winning ship will be called the Cock Ship till the next regatta.

INS Viraat

  • Viraatwas completed and commissioned as the British Royal Navy’s HMS Hermes on 18 November 1959.
  • HMS Hermes was decommissioned in 1984 and sold to India in 1986 and renamed as INS Viraat.
  • HMS Hermes took active part in Falkland Island Campaign in 1982
  • INS Viraat was the flagshipof the Indian Navy before INS Vikramaditya was commissioned in 2013.
  • She is the oldest aircraft carrier in service in the world and is one of three carriers based in the Indian Ocean region.
  • In February 2015, the navy announced plans to decommissionViraat in 2016, and began the process to obtain Defence Ministry clearance for the carrier’s decommissioning.
  • In July 2015, it was announced thatViraat would be transferred to the Andhra Pradesh government for conversion into a museum ship and tourist attraction, at a cost of rupees 20 crore. She will be docked at Kakinada.
