Seychelles committed to Indian naval base

Seychelles government has alloted a plot of land for India to build its first naval base in the Indian Ocean region in the Assumption Island.

It will be a joint venture of India and Seychelles, involving their Defence Forces. Once ready, the naval base will help India exercise greater control over the Indian Ocean’s western region all the way to the piracy-prone eastern African coastline.

Other major announcements:

  1. India will acquire a fully operational Coastal Radar System (CRS) based in Seychelles from March 2016.
  2. President James Michel of the Seychelles also declared support for India’s maritime security plans.
  3. Seychelles will support Indian efforts at the meeting of Contact Group for Piracy off the Coast of Somalia (CGPCS), which will hold its first meeting in Mumbai on January 31, 2016.

Objective:  

  1. To enhance mutual security along our western seaboard.
  2. To eradicate the scourge of Somalia-based piracy
  3. This base will be one of the major staging posts for a large maritime security network that India is setting up with the help of the various Indian Ocean region partner countries.
  4. CRS will provide India with the ability to gather intelligence and assist in surveillance operations of the vital energy lanes near Seychelles.
  5. It will help India to counter Chinese presence that has acquired its first African naval base in Djibouti in November.

Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia

Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia, (CGPCS), is an international governance mechanism established in New York on January 14, 2009 to facilitate the discussion and coordination of actions among states and organizations to suppress Somali Piracy.

The CGPCS was established in response to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1851 (2008), later recalled and replaced with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1918 (2010). To date, more than 60 countries and international organizations have become part of this forum, all of which are working towards the prevention of piracy off the Somali coast.

  1. Combined Task Force-150- that undertook Operation Enduring Freedom
  2. Combined Task Force-151
  3. Operation Atlanta of EU
  4. A monthly planning conference called Shared Awareness and Deconfliction (SHADE)

  • Destroyer INS Mysore
  • Frigate INS Godavari
  • INS Cankarso
  • INS Kalpeni
