India to host military exercise with 18 ASEAN Plus countries in March

As part of the India’s Look East policy, the Indian army is set to conduct one of the largest multi-national military exercises from March 2 to 8 in Pune. The Field Training Exercise (FTX), christened Exercise Force Eighteen, will see participation of over 360 personnel from 18 ASEAN Plus countries. The exercise is an outcome of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting.

Its theme will be Humanitarian Mine Action and Peace Keeping Operations. It will allow the armies of these countries to develop a common understanding in handling any complex situation. The exercise is part of a concerted attempt by India towards constructive joint efforts of ASEAN Plus militaries to enhance the peace and security of the region.

East Asia Summit

EAS is a forum held annually by leaders of, initially, 16 countries in the East Asian and South East Asian region. Membership expanded to 18 countries including USA and Russia at the Sixth EAS in 2011. EAS meetings are held after annual ASEAN leaders’ meetings. The first summit was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 14 December 2005.

India, Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea and the US — forms part of the ASEAN Plus and 10 ASEAN countries include – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
