Image makeover of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana: PMUY Plus

NDA government is set to get an image makeover of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, with the promotion of private corporate and other individuals participation through a scheme called PMUY Plus.

Highlights of PMUY Plus

  • A society will be formed by the three oil marketing companies (OMCs), viz. IOCL, HPCL & BPCL to run this programme.
  • Under the new scheme, private parties can pay for the subsidy for LPG connections of below poverty line families to this society.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

  1. AIM: Provide LPG connections to BPL households that will ensure universal coverage of cooking gas in the country. Under the scheme 5 crore free cooking (LPG) connections will be provided to below-poverty-line families over the next three years.
  2. FINANCIAL SUPPORT: The scheme provides a financial support of Rs 1,600 for each LPG connection to the BPL households.
  3. IDENTIFICATION: The identification of eligible BPL families will be made in consultation with the state governments and the Union Territories.
  4. FUND: Rs 8000 crore has been earmarked for providing five crore LPG connections to BPL households.
  5. FUND FOR 2016: Finance Minister in his Budget 2016 speech had announced a budgetary provision of Rs 2000 crore for 2016-17 to provide deposit-free LPG connections to 1.5 crore women belonging to BPL families.
  6. PERIOD OF IMPLEMENTATION: This Scheme would be implemented over three years, namely, the FY 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.
  7. Part funding from ‘Give It Up’: The scheme will partly be funded using the money saved from 1.13 crore cooking gas users voluntarily giving up their subsidies through PM’s ‘Give It Up’ initiative. Nearly Rs 5,000 crore of subsidies saved through the campaign is being used to provide LPG connection to the poor. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu — accounted for roughly half the people who have given up the LPG subsidy.

  • This measure will empower women and protect their health.
  • It will reduce drudgery and the time spent on cooking.
  • It will also provide employment for rural youth in the supply chain of cooking gas
