Angelique Kerber won Australian Open defeating Serena Williams

Angelique Kerber upset Serena Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to clinch the title and become the first German to win a grand slam title since Steffi Graff in 1999.

Serena was seeking her seventh Melbourne Park title and 22nd  overall, which would have moved her into a tie with Graff for the most grand slam singles titles in the Open era. However, the record for most single Grand Slams for woman since its inception is in the name of Margaret Court. She had won 24 single Grand Slams.

Australian Open is the first of the series of Grand slams held in the last fortnight of January.
